Hey there quilting friends! I am so excited to share with you all the project that has been consuming my creative energy for the past few months - my Civil War quilt! Now, before I go into all the nitty-gritty details, I have a confession to make. The fabrics in this particular quilt are not antique or vintage. They are, in fact, gorgeous reproduction fabrics that I sourced from two of my favorite online shops, Connecting Threads and Fat Quarter Shop, in addition to my local quilt shop, The Quilt Patch in Mount Pleasant, PA. While I love the look of antique fabrics, I wanted to ensure that my quilt would be durable and long-lasting, so I opted for these high-quality modern fabrics. But let me tell you, these fabrics are absolutely stunning and really capture the essence of the Civil War era.

I have to give credit to where it's due, and that's with the inspiration for my quilt blocks. I found an incredible book called "Hope's Journey - Classic Blocks, Reproduction Quilts, and Stories of Bygone Days" by Betsy Chutchian (available here on my affiliate link: https://amzn.to/3G0qyyI). This book not only contains classic block designs of the era, but it also includes engaging stories about the lives of women in America in the 1800's. It's been such a joy to not only create beautiful quilt blocks but to also dive into the history and stories behind them.
As I've been working on this quilt, I've found myself feeling a deep connection to the women who lived during the Civil War era. Their strength, resilience, and creativity are truly inspiring. I've been able to channel some of that energy into my own quilt, and it's been a really meaningful experience for me. One of the things that I love most about quilting is the way it allows us to connect with the past. Each piece of fabric, each stitch, carries with it a story and a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Creating this Civil War quilt has allowed me to feel like a part of that tradition, and it's something that I will cherish for years to come.
I've been taking my time with this quilt, really savoring the process and making sure that each block is as perfect as it can be. I want this quilt to be a labor of love, something that I can be proud of and that will hopefully be passed down through my own family for generations to come. I've also been experimenting with different quilting techniques and patterns, trying to capture the essence of the Civil War era while still adding my own personal touch. I plan to hand quilt the blocks, at some point. That will be something new for me, but I'm excited to give it a try.
It's been a wonderful learning experience, and I've definitely had some trial and error along the way. But that's all part of the fun of quilting, right? I can't wait to see this quilt come together and to finally see it all finished and ready to be admired and cherished. I have a feeling that it's going to be one of my favorite quilts that I've ever made, simply because of the history and meaning behind it. I hope you'll follow along with me as I continue to work on this quilt. I'll be sharing updates, tips, and maybe even a few setbacks along the way. But most of all, I'll be sharing the joy and satisfaction that comes with creating something truly special.
Thanks for joining me on this quilting journey, and I can't wait to see where it takes us!
Happy quilting,
Donna
